Background to the songs on 'Any Day Now'
Shine a Light : written about friendship and how it means so much. Evolved over the last 7 years and the version I play live is longer with some new bits added. Gonna do a new acoustic version as an additional song on my single.
Turn Around : about how we should enjoy the simple pleasures in life. Look around and enjoy the sun, the rain and wet roads!
Sad Girl : a song of support and hope.
Don't Look At Me That Way : sometimes you know a relationship is not gonna work but you can't walk away. This is one of those songs.
Felixstowe Days : the beach, children fishing, deckchairs, kites and a languid feel to the music. I love this song! It's romantic and paints a picture of an English sea-side town. I spend a lot of time there.
Someone Else's Date : One of the earliest songs on the album, it dates back to 1979 and reflects on pining for someone who is already dating someone else. Can't even remember her name now!
Twist the World : another old song. Love and the wistful melancholy feelings that associate with it. Funny who we fall in love with. Happy feelings there too.
Ghosts : one of my favourites. Written in the summer of 2003. It's about how we are all a part of each other. We all come from the same genetic material. Let's not be too hard on each other.
I Will Be Your Shelter : in empty streets I call your name...a lonely song. We all feel this from time to time and I guess I was feeling this when I wrote it around '84. One day I will write a happy song...but then again...
Change : be yourself but be open to change and growth. I never seem to be able to make relationships work. Just having a good old moan really. It's always the other person blah blah blah!!!
It's Up To You : I love this song. Strive to be happy, to make your spirit happy, to be at peace with yourself and others. Sublime. It really is up to you and me.
Shine a Light (reprise) : a little harkback to the start of the album, a unity, drawing together. Some nylon guitar and harmony vocals to finish. I think this works really well here. It's wistful and moody, bit like me.
Don't Bother With Clouds : written for Hannah. An exortation to fly, don't clip your own wings. You can do whatever you want. You can live the life you want. Again a personal favourite.
Sometimes : written for a dear friend going through hard times. I know she will be successful and have a great life because she has a beautiful soul.
Any Day Now : the title track eh. It's so easy to moan and take what we have so easily and not appreciate it. Be thankful. A simple song based around 2 chords. It came easily and I love playing it. Hannah does a splendid job with her gorgeous vocals at the finish of the song. Haunting.
I Know : the hidden track! We all share the same feelings. It's good to let people know that sometimes. Major 7th chords and simple melody, it was a bugger to record! Because there is only guitar it had to be spot on and do you think I could get it right? The answer is no. Though I did finally and it rounds the album off nicely with just the right note.
